American Academy of Arts and Sciences 23.1 (1969): 3-12. What's Wrong With 'All Lives Matter'? - NYTimes.com. NEW YORK TIMES, 15 Jan. 2016. Web. 20 Nov. 2016. <http:// shifter-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Whats-Wrong-With-All-Lives-Matter.pdf>. The problem facing the Black Lives Matter movement is the question of "why don't all lives matter?". Throughout history, there has been much mistreatment and unfairness towards African Americans. Black Lives Matter states a real problem African Americans have to constantly deal with on a daily basis; police brutality and racism. African Americans are not treated into the category of "All Lives Matter". Yes all lives do matter but the important message BLM is trying to tell is valuing the importance that there is much racism and segregation still today towards African Americans. The reasoning for the outrage and protesting from BLM is racist killings and police brutality towards African Americans has become normalized in our society. Whiteness in America has become more of value of skin and social power than a race in our society which makes African Americans look less powerful and accepted into society. What I found most eye-opening about this article is was the struggle BLM movement has to deal with when it comes to people accepting their message and wanting to matter to society. After reading this article, the biggest question I am left with from reading this article is how as a nation, are we going to fix

this issue of racism and police brutality when we are under a new elect-president who is racist and controversial?

This article “All Lives Matter, but so Does Race”, mentioned points about young black men being targeted. They point out that young black males from low-incomes housing, are usually the ones that are being killed without reason. Another big thing this article points out is how much the BLM movement uses social media. They rely on social media to get the word out about issues that are occurring. Leaders of the BLM movement are able to figure out what age group is following them and also what gender. Another thing they are able to pick up us what races and how many different races are following the movement. Three major women Alicia Garza,

Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, turned to social media after the death of Trayvon Martin. Their mission was to get word out about this is inhumane and unconstitutional because the murderer, George Zimmerman, was let off. One thing I found interesting was when Thandisizwe

Chimurenga said that anyone of race does not make one “immune” to the theory of white groups. He thinks that it goes beyond race and into a more intellectual concept. One thing that still bothers me is why these issues are being pushed aside?

This site shows the impactful pictures taken in the protest of black lives matter happen through out the country. one particularly powerful picture is number 10 taken in a protest in Detroit, Michigan is shows a young boy with a sign on his back with the words “will I make it

to high school or grave” This portrays the struggle all black people but especially black teens face everyday. These photos are symbolic of all the the work we still must do truly gain equality for all people

[4] Alicia Garza. A Herstory of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement. In Are All The Women Still White, editor, Janell Hobson. Pp 23-28 This article that was written by Alicia Garza, talks about how the Black Lives Movement was formed. When seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin was put on trial for his own murder the hastag “#BlackLivesMatter” was created. The man who shot Trayvon was not held accountable for killing this innocent kid. The movement stands for getting the justice that African Americans deserve. It’s proof of African American lives that are negatively affected in this society. The Black Lives Matter team grew across the nation. The people involved in this movement want to assure that they are not saying that your life doesn’t matter. They mean that Black lives are seen without value within white supremacy, they are important to your liberation. “Please do not change the conversation by talking about how your life matters too. It does, but we need less watered-down unity and more active solidarities with us, Black people, unwaveringly, in defense of our humanity.”

This article states that “Black Lives Matter” is just an new name for a movement that actually been happening for a very long time. it a talks about the fact that racism has always existed just under different names and different actions.

The last call took place at 7:12 p.m., Crump said, at about the time that the girl says Martin noticed that he was being followed and took off running. At 7:17 p.m., according to a police report, the first officers arrived on the scene . A patch of grass between a row of townhomes at the Retreat at Twin Lakes, the gated community in the Orlando suburb of Sanford, where

Trayvon, 17, was visiting his father. In a call to 911 prior to the confrontation, Zimmerman said

Martin looked high and suspicious, walking around slowly and looking at the homes. Crumps

says the phone records show he was doing nothing more than talking on the phone with a young lady he was fond of.
